Process tank with agitator: what to check before buying a used tank

A process tank with an agitator is not just a liquid storage vessel. It must support a repeatable process: mixing, homogenizing, heating, cooling or stabilizing the medium before the next production stage. That is why a used tank should be assessed not only by capacity and material, but also by equipment, service access and the possibility of adapting it to a specific line.

Medium first, tank second

The selection of a process tank should start with a description of the medium. Process water, dense suspension, food product, chemical agent or a mixture requiring constant temperature will all have different requirements. Viscosity, density, foaming, settling, crystallization and reaction with the tank material must be considered.

If the medium is chemically aggressive or requires frequent washing, it is worth considering a stainless steel tank or acid-resistant tank. For less demanding processes, a steel tank with suitable protection may be enough, but the decision should follow real working conditions.

The agitator must match the process

The phrase “tank with agitator” is not enough. The agitator type, position, power, rotational speed and drive condition all need to be checked. An agitator can maintain liquid uniformity, prevent sedimentation, distribute heat or mix components with different densities. If its parameters are wrong, the tank will consume energy without solving the process problem.

  • for low-viscosity liquids, circulation through the whole volume is important,
  • for suspensions, limiting bottom sediment is critical,
  • for viscous products, torque and agitator geometry matter,
  • for sensitive media, excessive aeration or shear should be avoided.

Nozzles, manholes and service access

A used process tank often has to be adapted to a new piping layout. Before purchase, define where feed, discharge, bottom drain, venting, level probes, CIP nozzles and sampling points will be located. A small difference in nozzle position can determine whether the tank is convenient or requires costly modifications after delivery.

The inspection manhole is just as important. In food, chemical or cleaning-intensive processes, access to the tank interior is a safety element, not an extra. As part of modernization, nozzles and fittings can be adapted, but it is best to plan this before transport.

Heating, cooling and insulation

For temperature-dependent processes, check whether the tank has a heating jacket, coil, insulation or the possibility of adding them. For some media, mixing alone is not enough because the product must maintain viscosity, reaction temperature or stability before feeding the line. In such cases, thermal equipment is as important as capacity.

With a used tank, inspect insulation condition, jacket tightness, heating-medium nozzles and the ability to clean zones where deposits may collect. These elements directly affect operating costs.

Documentation and technical condition

Before reserving a tank, check documentation, nameplates, work history, welds, heads, supports and drive components. If the tank will work in a system with specific requirements, the required documents and possible inspections should be defined in advance.

Not every used process tank will be a good choice. A good unit is one that can be adapted to the process without the modernization cost exceeding the logic of the purchase.

Summary

A used process tank with an agitator can shorten the investment schedule and reduce the cost of equipping a line, but it requires conscious selection. First define the medium, mixing method, nozzles, service access and temperature requirements. Only then should available tanks be compared.
