Tank for UAN fertilizer: steel, acid-resistant or plastic? How to choose the material

UAN is a popular liquid fertilizer, but storing it requires a properly selected tank. Not every material, coating and fitting works well in contact with fertilizer throughout the season. When choosing a tank, capacity is only one factor; chemical resistance, working temperature, filling, discharge and leakage protection are just as important.

Agrotex offers tanks for liquid fertilizers and steel tanks that, after technical assessment and adaptation, can work in farms and fertilizer distribution points. Material selection should be discussed before purchase, because it directly affects the durability of the whole installation.

What does UAN mean for the tank?

Urea ammonium nitrate solution is a liquid fertilizer that requires tight storage and regular tank condition control. Long-term resistance to the medium, weld quality, protective coatings, nozzle tightness and safe filling and discharge are all important. The tank should be selected not only for the medium composition, but also for actual working conditions on site.

Seasonality also matters. If storage conditions and fertilizer type allow it, UAN can be stored in winter, but temperature, crystallization risk and valve protection must be controlled. It is also worth planning level control, venting and access to the manhole. A poorly selected tank can lead to service costs, downtime and fertilizer loss.

Steel tank for UAN

Steel tanks are chosen for strength, high capacity and availability in many dimensions. They can be a good solution when they are properly prepared for fertilizer storage: with a suitable coating, tight connections and checked corrosion-prone areas.

With a used tank, the work history and the condition of the shell and interior are especially important. If the tank previously stored another medium, check for damage, deposits and areas requiring cleaning or protection. In practice, a well-selected steel tank can be cost-effective, but it should not be purchased without technical verification.

When to consider acid-resistant or stainless steel?

An acid-resistant or stainless steel tank is worth considering when the user expects higher material resistance, easier cleaning or longer service with more demanding media. This option may be more expensive at the start, but it provides a wider safety margin for aggressive substances, frequent washing or future changes in tank use.

This does not mean that every UAN tank must be made of acid-resistant steel. The decision depends on the medium composition, storage time, temperature, budget and user requirements. Before purchase, compare the cost of the tank, modernization, coating and expected service life.

Plastic tank: when is it a good choice?

Plastic tanks are popular in smaller installations because they are light and resistant to many chemicals. They work well where simple installation and moderate capacity matter. For larger fertilizer storage, however, stability, mechanical resistance, UV exposure, foundation and the risk of damage during farm equipment operation must be considered.

Large farms often compare plastic tanks with used steel tanks, because steel can provide higher capacity in a solid structure. The choice should follow the installation site, seasonal storage volume and the way deliveries are handled.

What to check before purchase?

  • whether the material and coating match the planned fertilizer,
  • whether the tank has the right usable capacity, not only total capacity,
  • whether nozzles fit pumps, hoses and the filling system,
  • whether safe venting and level control are possible,
  • whether the foundation protects the tank against deformation and leakage.

Summary

A good UAN tank should combine material resistance, tightness and convenient operation. Steel can be beneficial for large capacities and proper adaptation, acid-resistant steel increases the safety margin, and plastic works in simpler, smaller installations. The best choice comes after analyzing the medium, foundation site and seasonal work pattern. Agrotex helps assess available tanks and prepare them for liquid fertilizer storage.
