Can a Used Steel Tank Be Adapted as a Fire Suppression Tank? Technical Requirements.
Ensuring fire safety is the obligation of every owner of an industrial facility, warehouse, or farm. The key element of the system is the fire suppression tank (FP tank), which guarantees constant access to the required amount of water. Many investors wonder whether used tanks can be utilized instead of an expensive, new unit. The answer is: yes, but only on the condition that rigorous technical requirements are met.
At Agrotex, we specialize in the refurbishment and sale of used large-capacity tanks. We know that a properly prepared used steel tank can serve as a full-fledged FP tank, combining reliability with cost optimization. We invite you to contact us.
Why is a Used Steel Tank a Good Choice for an FP Tank?
Choosing a refurbished steel tank brings several significant benefits:
- Durability: Steel is a non-combustible material, resistant to mechanical damage and weather conditions. This is crucial for a tank that must be ready for use in an emergency situation.
- Cost: Used tanks after professional refurbishment are significantly cheaper than new units of the same capacity, allowing for large savings in the investment budget.
- Quick Availability: Often, large steel tanks are available immediately, which accelerates the completion of the investment.
- Ecology: Reusing existing resources is an eco-friendly action.
Key Technical Requirements for Fire Suppression Tanks
For a used steel tank to be legally and safely adapted as an FP tank, it must meet a number of technical requirements, most often compliant with the PN-EN 12845 standard or VdS guidelines. The mere fact that the tank is used is not an obstacle, provided its technical condition and equipment comply with regulations.
Here are the most important requirements:
1. Adequate Capacity
The tank's capacity must be precisely calculated by the fire suppression system designer. It depends, among other things, on the fire hazard class of the facility and the efficiency of the pumping system. Our offer of large steel tanks (often from 50,000 to 100,000 liters and more) ideally fits these needs.
2. Absolute Leak-tightness
This is a fundamental condition. Every used tank must undergo a verification and refurbishment process that guarantees 100% leak-tightness. At Agrotex, we perform sandblasting and apply new anti-corrosion coatings that protect the tank for years.
3. Material and Construction
Standard steel tanks (e.g., S235JR steel) are commonly accepted. An even better, though rarer on the secondary market, solution are acid-proof tanks (the so-called acid-resistant steel tanks). Their corrosion resistance is almost unlimited, making them an ideal, long-lasting solution for fire water storage.
4. Necessary Fittings and Equipment
Tank adaptation primarily involves equipping it correctly. A fire suppression tank must have:
- Suction Nozzle: Of an appropriate diameter, matched to the fire pump, often equipped with an anti-vortex plate.
- Supply Nozzle: For refilling water (e.g., from the water supply network).
- Drain Nozzle: Allowing the tank to be emptied for servicing purposes.
- Ventilation: Crucial for the correct operation of the tank.
- Water Level Indicator: Enabling constant monitoring of the available water reserve.
- Frost Protection: If the tank is located outdoors, it must have a heating system or adequate insulation to prevent the water from freezing in winter.
The Adaptation Process of a Used Tank at Agrotex
When a customer requests an FP tank, the adaptation process for the selected used tank proceeds as follows:
- Technical Verification: We thoroughly check the condition of the tank, wall thickness (so-called internal revision), and its history of use.
- Refurbishment Process: The tank is cleaned (sandblasted) and then protected internally and externally with specialized epoxy or polyurethane coatings, certified for contact with water.
- Installation of Fittings: In the workshop, we weld in the necessary nozzles (suction, supply, drain) according to the specification provided by the customer or their fire safety designer.
- Preparation for Transport: The tank is delivered to the customer.
Summary
A used steel tank is an excellent and economical alternative to new units, provided it is professionally refurbished and adapted to rigorous standards. The key is choosing a verified supplier who guarantees leak-tightness, proper surface preparation, and the installation of the necessary fittings.
